What Are The Problems In The Glass Packaging Industry

Date:Jan 07, 2020

The social economy is developing, people's living standards are constantly improving, the quality of life is getting higher and higher, and more and more attention is being paid to the packaging of food products. Compared with traditional plastic, paper, metal packaging materials, glass packaging materials have good performance characteristics: non-toxic, odorless, tightness, heat and pressure resistance, etc. Because of their extremely stable chemical properties, they hardly produce any Pollution and safety are at a high level and are therefore favored by most consumers. Coupled with the transparency, plasticity and aesthetics of glass packaging materials, it is very eye-catching. Due to market demand, vigorously developing glass material packaging is a very correct choice.

However, glass packaging materials are not perfect, and they also have many shortcomings. This shortcoming comes from the glass product itself: in the production process of glass products, the energy consumption is too high, and waste in the production process Will seriously pollute the environment. This point is that it is not in line with national energy conservation, emission reduction and sustainable development requirements, coupled with the continuous reform and innovation of other traditional packaging materials such as plastics and metals, the glass material packaging industry is currently facing great challenges.

1. High consumption of resources and energy

The main problem of the glass packaging industry is the high energy consumption of the production process, and at the same time it will cause very serious pollution to the environment. These two problems have seriously hindered the development of the industry. To produce glass packaging products, the key raw materials are quartz, feldspar, etc., and the key fuel required to burn glass is coal. In the process of ore mining, the ore take-up rate is generally maintained at 85% -90%, and the remaining 10% -15% ore cannot be effectively used. The yield of hard sandstone is very low, generally not more than 60%, and the comprehensive utilization rate of minerals is very low. Compared with foreign advanced technology levels, the energy consumption of backward technology levels in China is generally high. In terms of coal consumption, the total amount of coal consumed in China to produce the same amount of glass products is about twice that of foreign countries. In terms of electrical energy consumption, China consumes about 30% more electricity than foreign countries on average. The population base of China is huge, and the demand for glass packaging products is also huge. Therefore, China ’s consumption of energy and resources is even more amazing than abroad. For the production of glass products, it is not only the energy and resources that are consumed, but also the pollution to the environment. For example, toxic and harmful powder dust will be generated during the processing of raw materials, and toxic and harmful gases, smoke and dust will be emitted into the atmosphere when the glass is converted, and a series of harmful substances such as industrial wastewater will be serious. polluted environment.

2. Competition between different packaging materials

有 There are many types of packaging materials in circulation on the market, but the large number is glass packaging containers, which are easily damaged during transportation, which increases the transportation cost to a certain extent. In recent years, the development speed of paper products, metal and plastic products has continued to increase. Except for some products with relatively high corrosion resistance, the range suitable for glass containers has sharply decreased. For example, infusion bottles used in hospitals have long replaced plastic bottles with plastic bags, and the packaging of beverage bottles has also been changed to plastic and metal products. At present, only some high-end cosmetics, high-end liquor, red wine, etc. continue to use glass packaging, while other relatively low-end products are switching to plastic products, etc. because of their low added value. Therefore, only by advancing the development and improvement of glass packaging materials can we replace other packaging materials to a greater extent, or pose an effective threat to them.

3. Poor recycling effect

The use of glass products to package products can better respond to the national requirements for energy conservation and emission reduction, and also meet the trend of sustainable development. Under the current circumstances, the annual growth rate of waste glass packaging products in China is growing rapidly, and developed countries have started much earlier than us in recycling and reuse of glass, and have formed a relatively complete recycling and reuse system, and their achievements in this regard More significant. However, in terms of recycling of glass products, the average recovery rate of developed countries is about 50%, Germany has reached 80%, China has only 20% in this regard, compared with developed countries, the gap is still large.
